Terms of use
Last updated 17 October 2026
The short version
- Scholia is an app for keeping track of your books. Use it for yourself, and don’t misuse it.
- What you write in the app is yours. Your library stays on your phone as a guest and is also backed up to your account if you sign in.
- Book details and covers come from Open Library and may not always be right.
- The app is provided as it is. We work to keep it reliable, but we can’t promise it will never lose data, so keep your phone backed up.
These terms apply to the Scholia app and to this website. By using either, you agree to them. “Scholia”, “we” and “us” mean the people who make the app. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the app.
Using Scholia
You may use Scholia for your own personal, non-commercial use. Please don’t:
- copy, sell or redistribute the app, or pass it off as your own;
- try to break, reverse-engineer or interfere with the app or the services it relies on, except where the law allows it;
- use the app to send automated or excessive requests to Open Library or any other service;
- use the app in a way that breaks the law.
Your content
Your notes, ratings, bookcases and everything else you add belong to you. They’re stored on your device and, if you sign in, backed up to your account. We don’t claim ownership of them. You’re responsible for what you write and for what you choose to share, for example a Shelfie.
When you post or comment on the Home feed, you let us show that post or comment to other Scholia readers for as long as it’s up. You can delete it at any time.
Posting and commenting
The Home feed is for talking about books. There’s no room for objectionable content or abusive readers. Please don’t post or comment anything that:
- harasses, bullies, threatens or targets anyone, or attacks people for who they are;
- is sexually explicit, violent or hateful;
- is spam, advertising, or pretends to be someone else;
- shares someone’s private information, or breaks the law or someone else’s rights;
- spoils a book without marking the spoiler.
You can report any post or comment from the ••• menu, and block any reader. We review reports within 24 hours, remove content that breaks these rules, and may suspend or close the accounts of people who post it.
Book information
Titles, authors, page counts, descriptions and cover images are provided by Open Library and by what you type in. We don’t check them and can’t guarantee they’re accurate or complete. Book titles, cover images and descriptions belong to their authors, publishers and other rights holders. Scholia shows them only so you can recognise your books.
Our app
The Scholia name, logo, design, illustrations and software belong to us. These terms give you permission to use the app, not ownership of it.
App Store
If you downloaded Scholia from Apple’s App Store, Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies. These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple isn’t responsible for the app or its content, and has no obligation to provide support for it.
Scholia Pro subscriptions
Scholia Pro is available as a monthly or yearly auto-renewing subscription. The price and billing period for your region are displayed in Apple’s purchase sheet before you confirm. Eligible new yearly subscribers may receive a seven-day free trial, as shown in that sheet. Unless you cancel before renewal, Apple charges your account for the next period. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple account settings. Cancelling stops the next renewal; Pro access continues through the period you have already paid for. Refund requests are handled through Apple. If you have bought Pro before, use Restore Purchases in the app to restore access.
Changes and availability
We may update, change or stop parts of Scholia, and we may change the services it relies on. Some features, such as book search, need an internet connection and depend on Open Library being available.
No warranty
Scholia is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, as far as the law allows. We don’t promise that the app will be free of errors or that it will never lose information. Your library is stored on your device and may be backed up to your account; please keep your device backed up too.
Limitation of liability
As far as the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for loss of data, that come from using or being unable to use Scholia. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have that can’t be limited by law, for example as a consumer.
Ending
You can stop using Scholia at any time by deleting the app. If you seriously break these terms, we may stop providing the app to you.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, we’ll update the date at the top of this page. If a change is significant, we’ll let you know in the app. If you keep using Scholia after a change, the new terms apply.
